Shamy:

For me it was very difficult to believe in the principle of a woman’s right to choose, which I always believed in and still do, and to see your wife choose an abortion. I tried to talk her out of it, but she was determined to have it. I supported her physically but it was very hard for me to support her emotionally. I just had profound sadness about it. It was the first time in my life where something that was very rational to me, something I believed in, clashed with my emotions.

Daphna:

We had a lot of discussions about it. I didn’t have the physical strength or the emotional bandwidth to both have the child and run my program. And it was clear that my husband wasn’t going to back me on this.

I finally told him I had decided to have an abortion and I’d appreciate it if he would drive me to the clinic and back, which he did. I was lucky that abortions were legal and I could go to our health care provider and have it done there. This wasn’t an issue. My biggest issue was at home, dealing with my husband, who was really against it.

The next day, Shamy went off to work. I was completely a basket case. I went over to my friend’s house and spent the whole day crying. I think part of it was the hormones, just the craziness of what’s going on in your body, and part of it was that my husband wasn’t there emotionally to support me in this decision I had wrestled with. I remember saying to Shamy, it’s not like we aren’t going to have more children. We are going to have more children, just at a time when I can handle it better.
